Historic Baptism and Marriage Records

Thank you for your interest in the records of The United Church of Canada Archives. Please consult this webpage if you are looking for records needed for applications to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Please use the forms at the bottom of this page for your requests. Wait times are currently indefinite. We will respond to requests in the order in which they are received.

Our Relevant Holdings

For historic baptism and marriage searches, the most relevant records held by The United Church of Canada Archives are those of United Church congregations in Ontario, personal registers of clergy, and records from the Methodist, Presbyterian, Congregational (pre-1925), and Evangelical United Brethren (pre-1968) churches. These records are a subset of the Archives’ overall holdings and do not represent the full range of materials available.

We do not hold the records for other denominations such as the Catholic Church, the Anglican Church of Canada, Unitarians, or Baptists. You must contact the relevant archival institution for these organizations.

Requests received for records of other denominations will not be responded to.

For a more complete description of our holdings beyond baptism and marriage certificate requests, please visit the Our Holdings page.

Fees and Services

The United Church of Canada Archives can provide certified transcripts of baptismal, marriage, and burial records held within our institution. We can also provide limited research support (up to 30 minutes). The fees for these are as follows:

  • Research services (up to 30 minutes): $25 (HST included), payable before commencement of work
  • Certified transcripts from pre-1900 records: $50 (HST included), payable once record is located
  • Certified transcripts from post-1900 records: $30 (HST included), payable once record is located

To request research services, please fill out a request for a baptismal or marriage record. An Archives staff member will be in contact to facilitate. Requests for research beyond 30 minutes cannot be accommodated by Archives staff, and you will be referred to an external genealogist.

The Archives will provide you with a certified transcript of the record. We do not provide certified scans of the original record.

Records of the United Church Outside of Ontario

The United Church of Canada Archives holds the records for congregations in Ontario, excluding Ottawa and the Seaway Valley, and Northeastern Ontario (Thunder Bay and Kenora District). If your ancestor was born in another province, you will need to contact one of the Regional Council Archives across the country.

We are able to forward your request to the correct Regional Council Archives, but this will add to your wait times.
